Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has offered his apologies to the "forgotten generation" of children who were abused or neglected by the state in orphanages and children's homes between 1930 and 1970.
Many of the children came from poor families in Great Britain, some were sent by their parents with the promise of a better future in Australia. Others, often already in state care, were forcibly removed under the Child Migrants Programme. Some were told their parents were dead. Many parents were not told their children had been transported.
Many of the estimated half-a-million children involved were neglected by foster families, put in orphanages or used as cheap labour on farms. Prime Minister Rudd said it was "a shameful and ugly period" in Australian history.
It was a "matter of shame" that the "terrible policy" had continued for so long, he added.
"It would never happen today. But I think it is right that as a society when we look back and see things which we now know were morally wrong, that we are willing to say we're sorry."

Bangladeshi co-joined twins Trishna and Krishna are currently undergoing a series of operations to separate their brains. The large team of surgeons has almost completed the separation through the bone bridge between the skulls. After that part of the operation the twins will have plastic surgery work done... Medical advice is that it is vital to separate the pair so they can lead normal lives.

*What happened in the past, is now being healed through our actions in the present... Opening our hearts, feeling the pain and trying to make things different for our children, is just what ~these times~ are all about... I try not to fall into the trap of wading through the mistakes of my past and projecting them into the future... It is old world thinking to say that we must be punished for our past mistakes... Mistakes are apart of the human experience and are to be learned from... These times that we live in now are a turning point for us all as they are all about forgiveness and love and fixing what we can ~now~ by acknowledging the past and letting it go... Such actions as those above are examples of our world evolving into ~the new age~

What a beautiful post. Did you know I had a ancestry lineage to Keven Rudd? I had told someone. I don't remember if it was you or not. My Rudds came to America in the early 1700s and settled in Maryland. The other half of that family was Brooke.
I read a great book recently about the practice of sending English prisoners to Australia. After being there for a number of hears they were allowed to by land. I can't remember the name of the book.
