Collective Memory

i was listening to the ~wireless~ last night
as i was cooking dinner (as i am apt to do)...
and i heard something interesting about Bees
i pricked up my ears because i love Bees
(and frogs) and i know that both these creatures
are very sensitive to environmental change...
This particular talk was about the phenomenon 'Colony collapse disorder':
when worker bees from a beehive colony abruptly disappear
causing the hive to collapse...
It is being experienced now apparently all over the world...
and is frightening when you start thinking about a world without pollination (!!!)
But what was being discussed on the radio was suggested reasons why?
Some of the different proposals were: mites & insect diseases,
environmental changes such as pollution, pesticides,
GM crops and even cell phone radiation (!!!)
But the suggestion that i found most interesting
was that because of human interference with natural Bee cycles
that Bees have lost their connection to their 'collective memory'...
and so their reasons to 'be' Bees has been

~disrupted and disconnected~

"The collective memory" –noun
1. a memory or memories shared or recollected by a group, as a community or culture.
2. any collection of memories passed from one generation to the next.

This got me thinking about "us"
You and me and our "collective memory"
and the way our society has lost it's connections too...
You know, our individual connections to each other
our commonality, our history, who we are as 'one people'
i thought about how disconnection can cause us to become 'lost'
and then all the resulting diseases of mind, body and spirit that can ensue
and it caused me to wonder about the causes of war...

~disrupted and disconnected~

Then, well, dinner was ready and i was unable to hear the end of the discussion on the radio,
but needless to say i had more than just 'food for thought' for dinner!

These very same thoughts though visited me again as i settled into bed
with my latest 'night stand' book by Brian Weiss called 'Many Lives, Many masters'
where again i came across another reference to 'The Collective Memory'

Then today, as is often the case for me,
until a subject has been well and truly explored and digested (!!!)
This theme continued in the supermarket (of course, where else!?!)
Where i bumped into a tertiary student friend of mine
and a discussion ensued about Sustainable Farming practices
and how our planet now NEEDS to look at how to farm in harmony with Nature
before our dear Earth is completely depleted and barren...
And so the subject again resurfaced about Mother Earths 'Collective Memory'
and how our human footprint is disrupting the natural cycles of Nature

~disrupted and disconnected~

On the walk home from the supermarket
i thought about how we are all connected 'energetically'
and wondered again about just what may have caused as as a people
to start thinking of ourselves as separate and unconnected
when essentially more and more science is telling us that we are not so
i thought about a new neighbor going through hard times lately
and how initially i had been reluctant to 'interfere'
until my daughter asked me how we could help?
And i suddenly realized that i was trying to keep myself separate out of 'fear'
Fear of what? Being connected to my fellow man?

~disrupted and disconnected~

So needless to say i offered my hand...
Because, well, i figure that it's the only way to solve these problems of ours
The Bees, our farming practices, our world wars, our separateness
Is to understand and explore our ~connections~ to each other
our shared experience that supports and connects us all
the fragile, beautiful, and natural system of

~Collective Memory~

Vicki, this is such an important post! I am so saddened that as a people, we continue to disrespect the planet earth. I! always chalk our lack of caring up to the "me" decade, when humanity became so self absorbed. Technology came into being, cars became more available, and on and on. Sad, really.

You really packed a great deal of wonderful information and insight into this post. I've been worrying about the environment for quite a while now, too, and the bee situation is especially frightening. I really do hope the majority of humanity comes to its senses soon, then the rest will have to follow, right?

I really enjoyed reading that post ... start to finish.

I think ... as a human race we are very disconnected with each other and with nature.

Such an important post. I sat in my garden today for an hour and saw one bee. There were about four a five would come last year. The good news though. I walked down on a path where no-one lives and waited for a bus. While stood there for a couple of minutes I saw four bees. So they are out where people arn't spraying weed protection. There as got to be something done. TV/ scientist have made a super bee that is not effected by these lice, I am so hoping they are not messing with nature for the worse?
On a good note I will not use pestisides in my garden hoping this little will help?

:::sigh::: ... i could listen to you write all day :) ... collective memory of bees ... that's the coolest thing i've heard in a long time ... and yes, sometimes we don't see our connections as clearly as we could ...
