The Nanoknife

IRE Nanoknife: Alfred Hospital Melbourne

The IRE-Nanoknife is a precision image guided "surgical resection" system used by radiologists to induce cell death in soft tissue tumours.

It can achieve in a couple of minutes what would take over half an hour with ablation techniques and without the tissue destruction of conventional surgery.

At the Alfred Radiology department the procedure is being utilized for kidney, liver and lung tumours. Overseas it as been used in prostate and liver tumours.

The procedure involves the insertion of a pair of fine needle electrodes into the tumour under image guidance (CT or ultrasound).

Once the electrodes are in position a pulsating current is delivered over 1-2 minutes. The procedure requires a general anaesthetic but there is very little postoperative pain.

Advantages of IRE

  • Small needle electrodes with radiology guidance

  • Very short High voltage pulses create permant pores in cell membranes

  • FAST - typically 45 seconds per treatment

  • NO HEAT or thermal damage

  • Rapid disappearance of targeted cells

  • SPARING of supporting structures (Blood vessels, bile ducts, nerves)

  • No residual cavity or distortion

  • Almost no post-operative pain

NanoKnife Projected Applications

  • Prostate

  • Liver

  • Kidney

  • Pancreas

  • Lung

  • Brain

  • Uterine Fibroids

  • Endovascular (angioplasty restenosis)

*In a nutshell that's it folkes!

Thanks for all the information, Vicki. Not exactly the same as being "cut up with a knife," but still invasive (though minimally invasive, which is the goal of a lot of surgery today).
Knowledge shared makes experiences less scary. You are wonderful for doing that.
Blessings ad Bear hugs.
(And since you asked, Bear is doing ±OK these days — better than Bear has been! Thanks.)

Vicki this information sounds like it may be just what I need. There has been mention that my lesion may be soft tissue metastatic disease or even radiation necrosis. I certainly think I should be asking about this treatment.
The Alfred is the hospital in which my late husband had surgery in 1990. Between The Alfred, Peter McCallum and rehabilitation, we were there for 18 weeks. Quite a stint!
Hope you don't mind that I intend to post a little on this for my followers to read. They have been 'amazing' with support and information.
Love♥ and gratitude Vicki

Vicky, thank you so much for the information. I appreciate that very much. A fellow blogger from the U.S. had undergone Nano-knife for ovarian cancer. I had not heard of it before, which makes me wonder if it is an option in Canada, but I am going to speak to my oncologist about it.

I love how you search for solutions, and then present them to your medical team! I am very much the same way, believing that I am in charge of my health care, and that ultimately, I need to do what is best for me.

You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers lovely lady! And I continue to recall, pretty much every day, the lovely blog that you wrote on the train - do you remember that one? It truly moved me!
